At least nine people have been confirmed dead in severe flooding in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, local media reported on May 18.

Rivers across the region burst their banks, with thousands of people evacuated after half a year’s worth of rain fell in places.

This footage was released by Italy’s fire and rescue service, and shows the impact of the floods in Sant’Agata sul Santerno.

According to local media, the mayor of Sant’Agata sul Santerno was stranded in the town hall. The report said the area was isolated and residents were “almost all without food and with their mobile phones dead and are unable to call for help”. Credit: Vigili del Fuoco via Storyful
