OTTO PORTER JR.: What I learned playing under Steve Kerr because the system that they play is predicated with Steph being at the head of the snake, and playing with guys that are very unselfish and move the ball and play the right way. With Steve Kerr, it was more of just giving you guys confidence. And I think with Coach Nick Nurse, he does that already, being Coach of the Year, won a. Championship here.
And the system here is similar. The ball moves, they play fast pace, they're young and it seems like, you know, everybody loves to play with each other. And that's a good sign, and here's a great organization. And I can't wait to get started.
- I know the general view of the Raptors right now might be that they're still a team on the rise, that there's still more room to grow. What makes you think that this is a team that's ready [INAUDIBLE] in the playoff right now?
OTTO PORTER JR.: I mean, because a lot of the guys here came up underneath Toronto, underneath the city's eyes. They started out here being young, and this core grew up together. And, you know, the older guys won a championship here. They've been there, they've done it. So now it's getting all the younger guys and getting all the pieces that they need to be successful again.
- What have you made of Scottie Barnes as a talent [INAUDIBLE]?
OTTO PORTER JR.: Rookie of the Year. I mean, it speaks for itself. His size, his athleticism, to be young and have a lot of knowledge about the game.
He's raw, he's going to be good for years to come. And Toronto is very happy to have him. Future All-Star, I see. He's only going to continue to get better.
- You saw this team under Kyle, and now you've seen it under Fred.
OTTO PORTER JR.: Mm-hmm.
- Did it change much?
OTTO PORTER JR.: Um, I mean, two different point guards, two different styles. And then I think VanVleet's a great, great player, plays within themselves, plays within the system. And he got the ball rolling. You know, he's learned underneath Kyle, you know, Kyle being a veteran guy. He's learned a lot from him and it shows.
- Do you remember when, in your career, you stopped kind of viewing yourself as a younger player in the league and started looking at yourself as a vet? And what was that process like, kind of? [INAUDIBLE] yourself and taking that next level.
OTTO PORTER JR.: Yeah. I mean, I had a lot of vets my rookie years, second year. even then, they would call me old, 'cause I have, like, an old soul. But--
[LAUGHTER]
You know, you just learn a lot and you just try to help the next guy, at least for me. The older guys did that for me and I now want to do that for the younger NBA players coming into this league. This is a player's league, we have to take care of it.
