I love SKIMS – their products are generally well-made, innovative and in some cases (like the Seamless Sculpt Bodysuit) unmatched by any competitor. But spending $200 on PJs has always seemed a bit much to me.

Quick Overview

I had been wearing the Gap Modal pajamas for years by the time the Skims version came out — and one of the first things I noticed was they were virtually identical. While I considered making the switch to Skims as a luxury purchase, I couldn’t rationalize the price.

Most of my initial obsession was during COVID, so the only ones seeing my PJs were those in my home (or who passed me on a mental health walk). But it was when I started going away on girls' trips and weekends with friends again that I kept getting continuous “Are those the Skims pajamas?” and “How did you get those? They’re out of stock everywhere” — plus “I’ve never seen that colour before!”

Here is everything you need to know about these cute, comfy Gap PJ — which BTW, are currently a whopping 50 per cent off.

These pants are the perfect mix of loungewear meets sleepwear. They're a super soft modal fabric with a mix of spandex for welcomed stretch and a drawcord tie for an adjustable fit. The pants are currently available in classic black and grey, along with summer-ready colourways sugar pink and larkspur blue.

For a dupe, I’d say the comparison is nearly identical, with the Gap fabric being a mix of 89 per cent modal and 11 per cent spandex versus the Skims fabric being 91 per cent modal and 9 per cent spandex.

They’re sustainable too, being made with LENZING Modal, an amazingly soft wood-based fibre which is produced from trees harvested from sustainable forests.

Best part? You can just pop them in the washer and dryer. To compare, the Skims set recommends to “machine wash cold with like colours” and “lay flat to dry." I still treat them nicely and try to wash them with like colours, but the odd time I wash them with a set of towels or a blanket and they have come out just fine and are as soft (or softer) as the day I bought them.

The Gap Modal collection also includes shorts, pants, a long-sleeved button-down top and a short-sleeved button-down top.

Comparison to the Skims PJs aside, these truly are the best pajamas I’ve ever owned, hence why I keep going back for more. At this point, I have several pairs, enough to exclusively wear them until the next round of laundry and never have to compromise for another set. They are soft and delicate enough to feel an element of luxury, while also durable enough not to have to worry about snagging the fabric. I wear them all year around and they are great for any climate.

Plus, a flattering fit and sleek detailing make them double as loungewear — so I feel comfortable wearing them around friends or family on vacations or weekends away.

My one complaint is that they are so flowy and soft that they do tend to get caught up if you have sheets or covers that aren’t perfectly smooth, like flannel. That really isn’t a huge complaint and I realize how ridiculous it is to say, but worth noting as some people really do find that intolerable.

The main difference between these and the Skims set is the ribbing in the fabric, which gives a slightly different look and feel. As well, the Skims version only comes as a set, with either long pants and a long sleeve, or shorts and a short sleeve. Personally, I enjoy mixing and matching, so that gives Gap the competitive edge.

I’m not alone in absolutely loving these PJs — Gap reviewers seem to completely agree. Out of more than 1,000 reviews, 87 per cent are 5 stars.

"My favourite pajamas for years now!" raved one longtime Gap shopper.

"They are super comfy!" said another reviewer, while others called them "very soft and light" and "like sleeping in a cloud!"

While most reviews were positive, some customers did say these can run a bit big, so if you're looking for a more tailored fit you may want to size down.

Some shoppers also caution that the parts are thin and some of the lighter colours are semi-sheer with darker undergarments, which may play into your decision if you plan to wear these as loungewear.

Whether you're looking for a Skims pajamas dupe or just looking for a pair of comfy and soft PJs that are perfect for summer, these Gap PJs are a great option — especially at their sale price. I've been wearing them for years and have several pairs, and have been impressed by their comfort, quality and wear over the years.

However, some shoppers do say they run big — so you may want to size down (or try these on in store!), and if you're looking to wear these as loungewear you may want to keep in mind that some shoppers say they fabric is on the thin side.
