Yahoo Sports Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan hits back at critics of the show's diversity
When it came to television, Bridgerton was undoubtedly one of the biggest hits of the festive season. In fact, the show has had such a great response that it is in line to become Netflix's fifth biggest original series ever, with 63 million households tuning in to watch the period drama so far.
One of the unique elements of the show is the amount of diversity seen in the cast, something which hasn't really been done before with a major series set during this time period. And now, actress Nicola Coughlan (who plays Penelope Featherington in the show) has spoken out against those early critics who didn't believe that colourblind casting would work in a period drama.
"You know the way some people were like 'Diversity in period drama doesn’t work...'"Coughlan tweeted. "63 million households thought it did tho so."
A few minutes later she added: "Remember people were trying to downvote the show on IMDB cos it was so diverse? You can’t downvote us being Netflix's fifth biggest original release ever."

Following such a successful release, plenty of fans are hoping to see Bridgerton be picked up for a second season. And while nothing has been confirmed, Coughlan did set the rumour mill alight when she posted an image from the show's wrap party with the caption: "High five if you finished filming #Bridgerton Series One" – leading fans to wonder if that means season two is imminent.
