With five Wimbledon championships under her belt, Venus hardly could have expected to be soundly beaten, 6-2, 6-3 by the 32nd-ranked Bulgarian Pironkov for the second consecutive year.

The first day of play at the All England Club saw the #5-ranked men's and women's players both knocked out in shocking first round upsets.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal lost to 135th-ranked Steve Darcis of Belgium, while Italian Sara Errani was beaten in straight sets by 19-year-old Puerto Rican Monica Puig.

But history shows that even the sport's biggest stars can lose on the biggest stages.
