Due to Hurricane Irma, the NFL announced that the Week 1 game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins will be moved to Week 11. This is not the first time that Mother Nature has forced NFL games to be postponed or relocated, here is a list of football games that were affected by natural disasters.
A 6.9 earthquake hit the San Francisco area, forcing that week’s San Francisco 49ers game against the New England Patriots to be moved to Stanford University. The quake also more famously delayed the All-Bay Area World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics more than a week due to the damage done to Candlestick Park.
The New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins had to postpone their game after the Category 5 hurricane hit Florida. They faced off one month later.
San Diego County faced a state of emergency as wildfires ravaged the area. The San Diego Chargers had to move their game against the Miami Dolphins to Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.
The Miami Dolphins’ home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers was delayed 7 1/2 hours because Hurricane Jeane hit South Florida.
After Katrina brought destruction to the New Orleans area, the Saints had to move their remaining home games to the Alamodome and LSU’s Tiger Stadium.
Ike tore through the Gulf Coast and Houston’s Reliant Stadium (now NRG Stadium). Enough damage was done that the home opener between the Texans and the Ravens had to get postponed.
A December snowstorm in Minneapolis forced the Minnesota Vikings to postpone their game against the New York Giants from Sunday to Monday. Unfortunately, the Metrodome roof collapsed on Sunday evening so the game was moved to Ford Field in Detroit.
A huge blizzard hit the northeast in December of 2010. The Sunday Night Football game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles was postponed and the teams played the first ever Tuesday Night Football game.
The NFL couldn’t have the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers kick off in South Florida as scheduled on Sunday, not with Hurricane Irma expected to hit the area. So the NFL determined that the game would not be played until Week 11.
