Where are they now: Manti Te'o

In 2013, Manti Te'o had a bright professional career on the horizon. The Notre Dame star linebacker was the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 2012 and is one of the most decorated college football player of all time.

Te'o enrolled at Notre Dame in 2009. He was named second team All-American consecutively from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, Te'o earned multiple honors, including the Lombardi, Butkus, Maxwell, Chuck Bednarik and Walter Camp awards.

Te'o made a TV appearance with Katie Couric to disclose his involvement in a scandal revolving around the identity of his girlfriend. He claimed to be the victim of a hoax, after it was revealed that his girlfriend never existed and her death was faked. The person behind the hoax was Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, who would guest on 'Dr. Phil' and confess to the hoax.

Te'o skipped the 2012 draft to finish his senior year at Notre Dame, even though he was a projected late first-round pick. He was bumped up to mid-first round by midseason.

Te'o was drafted in the second round to the San Diego Chargers. He signed a 4-year contract and ended the 2013 season with 61 tackles and 4 passes blocked.

By the 2016 season, Te'o was named one of the Chargers' team captains. However, after a string of foot injuries, which went back to his rookie year, Te'o suffered a torn achilles and was placed on the injured reserve at the end of September 2016.

Te'o was released by the Chargers at the end of the 2016 season. The New Orleans Saints picked him up under a 2-year contract.

Injuries continued to hamper Te'o's performance into the 2018 season. Although he posted solid stats for the Saints, the team decided not to renew or extend a deal.

On March 18, 2019, the Oakland Raiders reportedly hosted free-agent LBs Te'o and Aaron Lynch.

Three days after his Oakland visit, Te'o met with the Detroit Lions. The 2019 season might be shaping up for a healthy Te'o after consecutive injuries plagued the LB since the beginning of his professional career.
