Hundreds turn up to greet Joseph Schooling at Changi Airport

Hundreds turned up to greet Singapore swimmer Joseph Schooling after his historic win at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The 21-year-old swim prodigy swam 50.39 seconds in the 100m butterfly - a new Olympic record - beating Olympic medallists Michael Phelps, Chad Le Clos and Laszlo Czeh.

Around 45 hours after winning Singapore’s first-ever Olympic gold medal, the country’s latest star touched down Monday morning at Changi Airport. Around 500 members of the public were at Terminal 3 to greet the 21-year-old, waving Singapore flags, displaying numerous signs of support and chanting their support for him. Schooling also got to see his father Colin, who did not join his son and wife May in Rio de Janeiro.

The line of fans, ranging from young kids to teenagers to the elderly, stretched to well outside the airport as Schooling did his best to oblige every photograph and autograph request. About one hour and 45 minutes after he first emerged, Schooling finally left in style, as the convertible he was in drove away with the top down.
