But if you’re not willing to part with foundation or mascara just because the weather is heating up, there’s some good news: You don’t have to.
The key is to look for — and avoid — certain ingredients and types of beauty product so you can create a look that lasts.
“Wax-based makeup and liners tend to melt quicker in hot weather, so look for gels or lighter liquid-based ingredients instead,” Rachel Nazarian, a dermatologist with Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, tells Yahoo Beauty. “With blush or eye shadow, avoid those that are powder-based, which will absorb sweat and turn goopy. Instead, look for those in cream or gel form, which are less likely to mix with your sweat.”
Also, matte formulas that fight shine should become your best friend this season. “Opt for oil-free, matte formulas in the summertime,” celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal tells Yahoo Beauty. “Waterproof formulas are also great during the hotter months. You want to keep your skin hydrated, so look for hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.”
For lips, cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson tells Yahoo Beauty that it’s best to look for lipstick that contains polyethylene. “They have a better shot of staying intact without being too hard,” she says. “But the reality is that lipsticks can only withstand so much heat before they melt, so please don’t expect that they will withstand being left in a hot car!”
Wilson adds: “You want to stay cool and so does your makeup! Leave it out of direct sunlight, opt to keep them in an air conditioned room and don’t leave it in the bathroom.”
From water-based foundations to lip color that lasts, here are 14 beauty products that can stand up to summer — no sweat.

La Mer Moisturizing Matte Lotion
Start your skin off right with a moisturizer that will hydrate your complexion without creating an oil slick. “I love La Mer oil absorbing lotion,” say Nazarian. “Since we still have to moisturize year-round, the heat of summertime can cause lotions to mix with sweat, leaving our skin feeling dirty and shiny. This particular product is wonderful at absorbing oil and sweat and keeping skin matte.” Looking for a moisturizer with SPF? Try Fre Defense Facial Moisturizer SFP 30 (Fré, $50). Fre’s entire product line is designed for skin that sweats. The ultra-light moisturizer is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores and trigger breakouts either.

Dr. Barbara Sturm + Monika Blunder Anti-Aging Primer
Primer is key to keep makeup in place. Stiles swears by this one. “It dries matte, but has a bit of matte shimmer in it, so you don’t look flat and cakey,” she says. “It’s a wonder product.” The anti-aging primer has antioxidants to fight free radical damage, as well as hyaluronic acid to hydrate skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. If you’d like some sun protection with your primer, Nazarian recommends La Roche-Posay Anthelios Daily SPF 50 Primer (LaRoche-Posay, $40). “Not only because it contains an SPF, which is vital for the summertime, but also because it absorbs oil and prevents skin from looking shiny; it’s also a great foundation for makeup.”

Make Up For Ever Water Blend Face & Body Foundation
“For summer I like water-based foundations and powder foundations, depending on your skin type,” says Stiles. “Anything with oil feels heavy in those hot and humid months. Right now I’m loving the Make Up For Ever Water Blend formula.” This lightweight, water-gel foundation delivers hydration and buildable coverage. If pressed powder is more your thing, Stiles is a fan of Aveda Inner Light Mineral Pressed Powder (Aveda, $25). “It makes a lovely powder foundation that’s still light feeling, and doesn’t make you feel like your skin is suffocating,” she says. You have to order the compact case separately (Aveda, $22); if you do, Stiles recommends ditching the sponge that comes with it and applying the powder with the side of a foundation brush for a lighter application.

Fiona Stiles Ultra-Smooth Waterproof Eye Defining Pencil
This waterproof eyeliner is designed to last for 14 hours without smudging. “They do not budge,” says creator Stiles. Another long-lasting option: Urban Decay Glide-On Eye Pencil (UrbanDecay, $20), which comes in nearly every shade under the sun. Pro tip: “To keep your eyeliner from smudging, you can also apply loose powder under the eye before using the liner,” suggests Roncal.

Nars Velvet Shadow Stick Eye Shadow
It’s not easy to find an eye shadow that doesn’t congeal into the crease lines or disappear altogether in the dog days of summer. One trick: Before applying shadow, dot eyes with primer to add longevity. “Eye shadows are tough in the summer because they crease more easily, so a primer is clutch here,” says Stiles. Roncal agrees: “I always use a primer before applying shadow, especially in the summer.” Then, swipe on Nars’s long-lasting Velvet Shadow Stick, which comes in 12 bold hues.
Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara
This smudge-proof mascara boosts lash volume and resists clumping. Plus, it’s safe for contact lens wearers and those with sensitive eyes. Not a fan of waterproof mascara? “Use your regular mascara first and then add one coat of waterproof to seal it,” suggests Stiles. “I also recommend using a waterproof mascara exclusively on the lower lashes during the summer. And add a little loose powder right under your lashes if you are using foundation or concealer — this will prevent any transference.”
Fiona Stiles Color Impact Matte Lip Crayon
This long-lasting lip crayon manages to be nondrying, creamy, and light. It comes in 6 bright and bold shades to make your lips pop for hours. “I love a strong matte lip with dewy, summery skin,” says Stiles. Or go light and easy — it is hot, after all — by simply swiping on a lip tint with built-in sunscreen, such as Fresh Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 (Fresh, $24), which nourishes lips and imparts a subtle rosy hue.
