Oilers sign goaltender Stuart Skinner to 3-year extension

The Edmonton Oilers have signed goaltender Stuart Skinner to a three-year extension worth $2.6 million annually, the team announced on Monday.

Skinner has split goaltending duties with Jack Campbell this season, but has emerged as the more productive player. The 24-year-old has appeared in 19 games this season, posting a 9-8-1 record with a 2.83 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

Campbell was supposed to be the Oilers' solution in goal this season after signing a five-year, $25-million deal in free agency this summer, but instead has been one of the NHL's worst netminders. In 14 games this season, Campbell has a 4.04 GAA and .875 save percentage, which rank bottom-five league wide among goalies with 10-plus starts. The 30-year-old was an All-Star with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, finishing with a 31-9-6 record to go along with a 2.64 GAA and .914 save percentage.

Edmonton is no stranger to instability in the net, having relied on the inconsistent tandem of Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen in recent seasons. The extension of Skinner is a testament to his hot start as well as the Oilers trying to stabilize their core. Though there are still concerns about whether Campbell can return to form, and if Skinner can handle the new pressure of a heavier workload.
