Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the major European stars who could join MLS next season

It has been argued that the days of megastar players coming to Major League Soccer from Europe to eke out the autumn years of their careers are slowly petering out.

The underwhelming tenures of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard — coupled with the relative successes of teams who do not pay through the nose for their Designated Player spots — suggest that America’s top flight is moving away from its much-derided position as a “retirement league.”

However, there are several European-based superstars who would relish the opportunity to come to the States. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one such superstar who has been heavily linked with a move across the pond — and recovery from his most recent injury may just coincide with the 2018 MLS season.
