Youssouf Fofana: Manchester United target close to joining AC Milan

Youssouf Fofana is reportedly close to joining AC Milan.

The French midfielder, who had been on Manchester United’s radar, is set to join Milan for a reported fee of €14 million, with additional bonuses still under negotiation.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Gerry Cardinale, head of RedBird Capital, made an unannounced visit to Milan to fast-track the deal.

He convened with key figures at the club, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, president Paolo Scaroni, CEO Giorgio Furlani, and sporting director Geoffrey Moncada, which significantly pushed forward the discussions with Monaco.

Fofana’s move, reportedly agreed on a four-year contract, will see him double his current salary to €3 million annually, inclusive of bonuses.

Paulo Fonseca has reportedly been eager to secure Fofana, appreciating his abilities during their encounters when he managed Lille.

Milan’s proactive approach, spurred by the potential competition from United and Atletico, has paid off, ensuring they capture one of the more promising midfield talents in Europe.

Fofana is expected to join his new teammates at Milanello on August 2, after completing his medicals.

For Man United, missing out on Fofana could prove a setback, particularly in light of their need for reinforcement in the defensive midfield role.

The 25 year old,  known for his ball-recovery skills and physical presence, would have been a valuable addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad.

As the new season approaches, United face a pressing issue in midfield with Casemiro showing signs of decline.

At 32, the Brazilian’s physical capabilities have noticeably diminished, impacting his defensive effectiveness. His reduced mobility has left gaps in United’s midfield, underscoring the necessity for a younger, dynamic replacement before the transfer window closes.

United urgently need a player who can offer defensive solidity and complement the promising Kobbie Mainoo.

This ideal candidate must be intelligent, technically proficient, and physically dominant to reinforce United’s midfield and provide the stability required for a successful campaign.
