It had been over 41 years since Aston Villa last played and scored in the Champions League/European Cup, but Youri Tielemansā€™ 27th minute goal gave them the lead against Young Boys in their first game back in the competition.

And it didnā€™t take them long to get their next!

Villa, who famously won the trophy in 1981/82, had last played in the competition the following season, bowing out to Juventus in the quarter-finals.

Their scorer in the 3-1 second leg loss, Peter Withe, was also the matchwinner in the final the year prior against Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.

Their long wait for a return to Europeā€™s top table ended when Unai Emery guided them to fourth place in the Premier League last time around, and now Tielemans has got their first goal, giving them a precious lead in Switzerland.

And it was a goal straight off the training ground, as a corner routine led to John McGinn finding the Belgian midfielder inside the box, who finished brilliantly through a sea of players.

What a moment for everyone connected to the club, even more so in light of the death of club legend Gary Shaw on Monday night.

They didnā€™t have to wait long for their next either, 11 minutes to be precise, as Jacob Ramsey tapped home after some calamitous Young Boys defending.

Amadou Onana sealed the clubā€™s first win in the competition since November 1982 in the second half, capping off a brilliant night for the Villains.
