New York Jets fire general manager Joe Douglas amid grim season

Nov. 19 (UPI) -- The New York Jets, who entered 2024 with postseason expectations, fired general manager Joe Douglas after a 3-8 start to their campaign, owner Woody Johnson announced Tuesday.

Phil Savage will serve as interim general manager for the remainder of the season. Johnson said the Jets will immediately start their search for a permanent replacement for Douglas.

"Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the general manager of the New York Jets," Johnson said in a news release.

"I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward."

The 2024 Jets won two of their first three games. They then lost seven of their next eight. The Jets have the No. 7 defense in the NFL, but totaled the seventh-fewest yards on offense through 11 weeks. They have the No. 30 rushing offense and No. 18 passing offense.

In six seasons under Douglas, the Jets went 30-64. They never made the playoffs or finished a season with a winning record during Douglas' tenure.

The Jets, who fired head coach Robert Saleh in October, are 1-5 under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich. In addition to a new general manager, the Jets also will look to hire their fourth coach since 2018.

Douglas previously served as vice present of player personnel for the Philadelphia Eagles, as a scout for the Chicago Bears and inside the player personnel department of the Baltimore Ravens. He helped structure three Super Bowl title teams, including the 2000-01 Ravens, 2012-13 Ravens and 2017-18 Eagles.

The Jets are still searching for their first Super Bowl title since 1968-69. They won their last playoff game in 2011. Ulbrich and the Jets are on bye in Week 12. They will host the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 1 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
