Yankees score go-ahead run vs. Royals after controversial review. Was it the right call?

One of the most significant moments of Saturday’s Game 1 between the Royals and Yankees came down to a replay review.

And a few moments later, the Yankees cashed in with a go-ahead run in a 6-5 victory over the Royals at Yankee Stadium.

In the seventh inning, the Royals challenged a call at second base, and appeared to have a shot at an overturn.

Michael Massey applied a tag on the Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm, who attempted to steal second but slid short of the bag. That allowed Massey to make an acrobatic play, tagging Chisholm just an instant before he touched the bag — or so the Royals believed.

Chisholm was called safe, but Massey pointed to the dugout and the Royals challenged. At first, the TBS broadcast crew expected it to stand, but upon seeing the slowed-down replay determined the play was going to be an out.

Many fans on X (formerly Twitter) — and a former Royals star in Eric Hosmer — agreed.

The play, however, stood on replay. Chisholm remained at second base and scored the go-ahead run on a hit from Alex Verdugo.

The Royals brought the top of the order to the plate in the ninth inning but were unable to find a tying run.
