Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso admits it will be ‘fantastic’ to face Inter as they will try to win in ‘every possible way’ against one of the ‘strongest teams in Europe’ to qualify among the Champions League top eight.

Last season’s Europa League finalists and the Nerazzurri are set to meet on Tuesday in a clash opposing two sides separated only by three points in the standings of the renewed Champions League’s group phase, and the Spanish coach claimed they are ‘looking forward’ to hosting a team with ‘great players and one of the best coaches in the world’.

The ability to ‘control matches’ and having a ‘clear idea of what they want’ are what make Inter particularly tough to take on, according to Xabi Alonso, who also insisted that his side ‘always want to play to win’.

Xabi Alonso: Leverkusen ‘ready’ to face ‘consistent’ Inter

“We know we’re facing one of the strongest teams in Europe, but we’re ready and have trained well,” the German side’s coach told reporters at a pre-match press conference, as quoted by TMW.

“There’s a lot of expectation for us. Inter are extremely consistent, they’re very solid, and they have a clear idea of what they want.

“They know where to take the game, they’re very mature, and it will be fantastic to play against them.

“They’re a winning team, they played in the Champions League final two years ago, and won the league title.

“Inter control matches very well, they have great players and one of the best coaches in the world, so we’re looking forward to hosting them in our stadium.

“I rate them very highly; it’s not just about having top players but playing collectively.

“They know how to press high, they can play short or long passes, they know how to work on transitions and rotations, which is typical of Italian football.

“It will be a great challenge for us, and we can’t wait.”

Hakan Calhanoglu’s three-season stint at Bayer Leverkusen put him in the European spotlight, earning him a move to Serie A in 2017, but Xabi Alonso pointed out his game has since ‘change a lot’.

“We don’t focus on individual players, but he is certainly someone who has a big impact on the game,” the former Real Madrid midfielder added.

“I remember when he played here, he was a No. 10. His game has changed a lot over time. He’s a key player for them, just like Kimmich is for Bayern Munich.

Former Roma flop Patrick Shick has blossomed at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, who said he is ‘feeling better’ and is not ruled out of Tuesday’s game after missing his side’s last match due to a calf injury.

“He’s getting closer to his best form, he’s feeling better, and we don’t rule him out,” the 43-year-old said.

“Tomorrow morning we’ll check if he’s fit enough to start or maybe come on during the game.”
