In a dramatic and closely fought match, Everton took all three points from Carla Ward’s Aston Villa. The win moves the Toffees eighth in the Women’s Super League, having taken eight points from their opening run of games.

Aston Villa finished the weekend occupying tenth place, having registered two wins from their first eight league games.

How it went

An unfortunate own goal from Anna Patten kicked off the goal-scoring action for the afternoon. A sloppy piece of defending from Villa saw the 24-year-old turn the ball into her own net nine minutes after the break to gift Everton the lead. Just a minute later, Rachel Daly found an almost immediate response to restore the deadlock.

Despite registering 14 shots on goal throughout the tie, Villa lacked the clinical edge to convert their chances as they searched for their second of the afternoon.

Following a foul on the edge of the area, Everton were awarded a spot kick. Heather Payne was brought down in the box by Kirsty Hanson, leaving Stacey Pearson little choice but to award the penalty. Nathalie Björn stepped up and converted as she sent Daphne Van Domselaar the wrong way to give the Toffees the lead.
