This WR has KC Chiefs’ coaches in his corner at training camp. Will it be enough?

For two years, Chiefs wide receiver Nikko Remigio has been a training camp favorite. Even with the odds stacked against him, he wants more.

“You know, I’ve always been an underdog, every single level of football that I’ve played at,” Remigio said. “So, you know, being in this position is nothing new to me.”

The path to a roster spot likely takes Remigio, signed as an undrafted free agent two years ago, through drafted players who are more established..

But Remigio brings his own set of qualities. He’s been a reliable target throughout camp, working with all quarterbacks, and he had an outstanding day on Wednesday. In an 11-on-11 team drill, Remigio hauled in a deep pass across the middle from Carson Wentz.

It’s not the first time Remigio has flashed. In a preseason game at the New Orleans Saints last season, Remigio led the Chiefs with four receptions for 71 yards. But he suffered a dislocated left shoulder and spent the rest of the season on the practice squad. For Super Bowl LVIII, that meant having the best seat in the house, watching from the sideline.

Precisely where Remigio didn’t want to be.

“I think it’s every kid’s dream, to be at the Super Bowl and see that,” Remigo said. “But if I’m going to be completely honest, it was a bit of mix of emotions for me...I want to play.”

Has that day, watching the Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers in an overtime thriller, stayed with Remigio?

“Absolutely,” he said.

The Chiefs wide receiver group has been bolstered by the additions of Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy. Returning players Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore and Justyn Ross speak to position depth..

Remigio, who played his first four college seasons at California before finishing at Fresno State, believes there is a place for him. To hear teammates and coaches, they give him a fighting chance.

Special teams coach Dave Toub said Remigio one of the players he’s most looking forward to seeing in action when the Chiefs open their preseason schedule on Aug. 10 at Jacksonville.

This from Andy Reid: “He’s a smart and hard worker. You can tell he studies because he knows all the spots. He’s got a great attitude, a positive attitude, so those are the kind of guys you pull for.”

During OTAs, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy called Remigio, “an absolute true professional. Every day in the meeting room, every day at practice, it’s the same speed, the same mentality. You root for guys like that.”

Remigio has checked every box to put himself in a favorable position, starting with working with Patrick Mahomes and other receiving targets in Texas before OTAs. He’ll look for a payoff by continuing to impress his coaches with his talent and work ethic at training camp.

““By no means has it been easy,” Remigio said. “I’m just trying to punch every single day, put my best foot forward and be the best version of myself so I can find a role for myself somewhere on this team.”
