‘I wouldn’t be writing him off yet’- Roy Keane urges Ten Hag tactical switch for key Manchester United star
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has urged Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag to consider using Casemiro in a different tactical set-up to improve his performances.
Casemiro had a very successful first season after becoming a Red Devil in the summer of 2022.
However, the veteran midfielder has since struggled to re-capture the form of his debut campaign.
Last year Casemiro’s season was hampered by injury and he struggled to reach a consistent level for Ten Hag.
It was expected that the former Champions League winner would leave Old Trafford this summer with Saudi Arabia as an expected destination.
However, no clubs firmed their interest with no offers arriving for Manchester United’s number 18.
The 32-year-old United star had a performance to forget against bitter rivals Liverpool last time out in a 3-0 defeat.
Casemiro was replaced at halftime by academy prospect Toby Collyer after he struggled to keep the ball or cover ground in a frantic first-half performance.
Roy Keane urges Erik ten Hag to change Casemiro position
In the fallout of the Liverpool defeat, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes the Brazilian should be deployed in a different tactical set-up.
Speaking on the podcast Stick to Football, Keane said: “I wouldn’t be writing him off yet.
“His role in the team, if he gets back in and a couple of games under his belt, might be a bit higher up the pitch.
“The first thing we always say is, ‘he can’t get around the pitch’. But what we’ve seen going forward, he does have an eye for a pass. Set-pieces, how many times does he get his head on it?”
“He’s come back and he’s lost a lot of weight, sometimes that can affect a player.
“Players becoming fitness freaks… you can go too far the other way. You still need that strength and power in the middle of the park.”
