He’s won more races at Churchill Downs than any horse. Here’s how the record fell Friday.

There’s a new all-time wins leader at historic Churchill Downs.

On Friday afternoon, 7-year-old Bango won his 12th race at the famed Louisville track to become the horse with the most victories in Churchill Downs history.

Trained by Oldham County native and Louisville-based Greg Foley and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Bango prevailed in an allowance optional claiming race that went 6 furlongs on a sloppy dirt track as Friday’s third race at Churchill Downs.

Bango faced only three other horses during his record-setting win. The race initially had a five-horse field, but one horse was scratched prior to post time.

Bango went off at 9-5 odds and he finished in 1:09.76.

“It’s a special day,” Foley said after the race. “He’d won in the mud before, and he doesn’t really care much about a racetrack. Of course, he loves this one, Churchill Downs.”

Bango’s 12 victories at Churchill Downs now include five wins in allowance optional claiming races, two wins in the Aristides Stakes and one win in each of the Kelly’s Landing Stakes, St. Matthews Overnight Stakes, Bet on Sunshine Stakes, Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes and a maiden special weight race.

“His works the past three, four weeks have been phenomenal,” Foley added about Bango, whose first Churchill Downs victory came as a 2-year-old in a maiden special weight race at the track in November 2019. “If he didn’t run today, we probably would have took him home.”

Foley said Bango could next be pointed toward a November stakes race at Churchill Downs.

Bango’s career has also included wins in stakes races at Ellis Park in Henderson and Turfway Park in Florence. His career earnings total more than $1.6 million.

Bango has run a total of 24 races beneath the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs, meaning he now owns a winning percentage of 50% (12-for-24) at the Louisville track.

He has a career record of 15-4-4 across 38 starts.

A Tamaroak Stable homebred, Bango’s win on Friday broke a tie atop the Churchill Downs wins leaderboard with Ready’s Rocket, who won 11 times at the track at the claiming or starter-allowance level.
