Women's Football: Top three performers from the weekend

Despite just four games taking place this weekend throughout the FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship, there was intense drama to supplement several sublime individual performances.

While Arsenal returned to the summit of the Super League with an emphatic 5-1 win at Liverpool, Tottenham missed out on the chance to stay top the Championship as they were downed late on by Sheffield United.

With several fantastic moments across the two leagues, here’s the top three performers who defined a brilliant weekend of football.

Beth Mead (Arsenal)

With Manchester City’s good form piling the pressure on Arsenal as the title race reaches the business end of the season, it was clear the Gunners needed a result at Liverpool.

Cue Beth Mead, who’s work on the wing has been so important in the Arsenal attack throughout the season.

With her team 1-0 up, she ran onto a bouncing cross to squeeze the ball home before a familiar moment of magic came in the second half.

Picking up the ball outside the area, Mead floated the ball over the goalkeeper’s head from an impossible angle – an identical finish to her goal for England against Brazil last month.

Her 5th and 6th goals of the season returned Arsenal back to the top ahead of the clash with Manchester City on the final day of the season.

Lucy Graham (Bristol City)

With Everton on top at Bristol City, it would require a moment of magic from the home side to break through the dominant visitors.

And when Lucy Graham scoped her target from 30 yards out, the faithful knew exactly what they were getting.

The 22-year-old’s sweetly struck attempt found the top corner and handed her side all three points.

Katie Zelem (Manchester United)

With Spurs losing to Sheffield United, it was imperative that Manchester United picked up all three points at a strong Charlton side.

After a tense first half saw the sides go in level, Zelem made no mistake on the hour mark when she slotted home from 12 yards following a handball.

Minutes later, she put in a wonderful cross for Jess Sigsworth to score her 12th goal of the season and put the game out of sight.

Despite Kit Graham’s consolation goal with 10 minutes to go, Zelem’s virtuoso performance ensured her side finished the weekend at the top of the Championship.
