With the FA Women’s Super League and Championship in full swing, there were plenty of stand-out displays in the top tiers of women’s football.

Arsenal and Birmingham remain at the top of the WSL with maximum points, while Manchester City snatched a late draw and Manchester United continued to impress.

Here we take a look at three top performers from the weekend.

Steph Houghton

Captaining England at the last two major tournaments, Manchester City’s Steph Houghton knows what it takes to lead by example.

When her team were losing 2-1 at home with only a minute to play, Houghton stepped up to the plate and saved her side with a stunning goal.

She found herself on the edge of the box after Bristol City failed to clear a corner and struck the ball first time to send it flying past Sophie Baggaley into the top corner in the 90th minute.

The point meant Man City stay inside the top three of the WSL, giving Houghton’s heroics even more significance as they build their challenge for the title.

Mollie Green

The newest team in Manchester remain undefeated in the Championship, with United on maximum points having scored 20 goals and conceded none in their opening three games.

An away win at London Bees kept them firmly at the top of the league, with Mollie Green bagging herself two goals in an excellent performance.

The 21-year-old opened the scoring after 17 minutes, following Lauren James’ low delivery into the box to tap home to start United on their way to the triumph.

She added her second and United’s fourth before the hour mark when she found herself in space to put the ball through Bees keeper Sarah Quantrill’s legs, solidifying the victory.

Ann-Katrin Berger

Birmingham City beat Reading for their third successive victory to maintain their 100% start in the WSL.

But crucially the Blues are yet to concede a single goal, with three 1-0 wins in a row putting them in second place, and credit has to go to the Birmingham shot-stopper Ann-Katrin Berger.

She denied Reading throughout on Sunday to keep another clean sheet, proving significant with the outfield players lacking in firepower so far.

When Brooke Chaplen broke through for Reading, Berger made a smart double save and then kept the ball out from a 95th minute Fara Williams free-kick in the last play of the game despite being down with a head injury beforehand.
