A woman and a 5-year-old child suffered life threatening injuries after being struck by a car Friday night, according to Kansas City police.

Officers responded to a 10:01 p.m. crash near Blue River and the eastbound lanes of Interstate 435, according to Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for the department.

An investigation determined a Chevy Equinox traveling east had run out of gas and stopped in the fifth lane of the interstate, blocking traffic.

Other cars swerved into nearby lanes to avoid colliding with the stalled vehicle, which had its hazard lights on.

The surrounding crowd of vehicles made it difficult for the driver of a Suzuki Grand Vitari, also heading east, to switch lanes. He pulled over to stop on the interstate’s right shoulder.

He did not see a woman and a 5-year-old child walk onto the roadway.

The driver was unable to stop his car before striking the pedestrians as they stepped onto the interstate’s shoulder.

The impact sent both the woman and the 5 year old flying across the pavement about several feet away.

They were transported to a metro area hospital and treated for critical injuries.
