Winners, losers in NBC Sports’ 2016-17 NHL TV schedule

NBC Sports Group announced its 2016-17 NHL schedule on Thursday, with 106 NHL regular-season games spread between the networks.

Some teams made out great. Some teams … not so much. Here’s a look at the winners and losers in NBC’s 2016-17 TV schedule. (And here is a look at last year’s winners and losers.)

WINNER: Wednesday Night Rivalry Night

It does appear that most, if not all, of the games scheduled for Rivalry Night feature honest-to-god rivalries.

Although that Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Chicago Blackhawks one is a little suspect.

LOSER: Nashville Predators (and by proxy, us)

You can’t always account for late-breaking news when constructing a broadcast schedule, but what a bummer that the Preds get a chance to bring P.K. Subban to American TV audiences and their total appearances are actually cut in half from four to two.

WINNER: Boston Bruins

The Bruins go from 12 games on NBC and NBCSN last season to 17(!) this season, as obviously the acquisition of David Backes means eyes on glued to the B’s. Or maybe they’re just a gigantically popular regional team.

LOSER: Toronto Maple Leafs

Outside of their “Centennial Classic” against the Red Wings, No. 1 overall pick Auston Matthews and the Leafs don’t appear again on NBC or NBCSN.

WINNER: Specific Rivalries

The Capitals-Penguins, Kings-Sharks, and Flyers-Rangers will each appear four times on NBC or NBCSN. Sorry, Penguins-Flyers and Kings-Ducks!

Here’s the NBC schedule:

LOSERS: New Blood

The Dallas Stars hold steady at four games despite being one of the most exciting teams in sports. The Florida Panthers hold steady at one game despite winning the division last season. Who’s booking this? Vince McMahon?

WINNER: The Western Conference, Sorta

NBC says that 54 of their 106 broadcasts will feature at least one Western Conference team. Of course, when you’re featuring the Blackhawks 21 times …

LOSER: Connor McDavid and Milan Lucic

The Edmonton Oilers are not featured once on NBC or NBCSN. Despite having McDavid. Despite having Lucic, free agency’s big prize. Despite trading Taylor Hall to the Devils to set up an interesting game with them. Sucks for them. Sucks more for us.

Here’s the full breakdown of appearances. The number in parentheses is last season’s total.
