Wimbledon 2024: Sonay Kartal plans new tattoo to mark Coco Gauff result

Sonay Kartal has set her sights on another tattoo, immaterial of what happens in the next round against Coco Gauff.

The inked-up 22-year-old Brit produced another assured performance to beat Clara Burel 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 and book herself an inevitable first appearance on a Wimbledon show court against American Gauff in the next round.

It was her fifth win of this Wimbledon campaign, having come through qualifying, and she has already banked a hefty £143,000.

Asked if she planned another tattoo to add to her collection if she pulled off a shock against Gauff, she said: "I think so. I think there will probably be a bet in place with my coach. He also has tattoos, he's pretty covered.

"There's always a joke in the slams that we play if I reach certain rounds et cetera there will be something. I think maybe despite the outcome, whatever it is, I think there could be one potentially."

Kartal is hoping Wimbledon officials schedule her on Centre Court tomorrow against the world No2. She first visited it as a seven-year-old during the tournament with her family — and still has a picture of the experience in her bedroom.

Now, with the prospect of finally playing there looming, she said: "Those are the moments you dream of as a little kid. If it is Centre Court, I'll be super-excited, super-proud. It's going to be a tough match. I'll give myself a good chance."

She faces a formidable challenge in trying to unpick Gauff, the US Open champion and one of the tournament favourites.

"There's a reason why she's No2 in the world," said Kartal. "I'm going to put all of that aside. I think I'm going to go on there, got nothing to lose and I'm just going to enjoy the moment and give it everything and see what I can do."
