Wimbledon 2024: Quarter-final briefly suspended after medical emergency in crowd

Taylor Fritz’s Wimbledon quarter-final against Lorenzo Musetti was halted because of a medical emergency in the crowd.

Fritz, the American 13th seed, had won the first set 6-3 against 25th seed Musetti of Italy, but the match was paused by umpire Damien Dumusois before Musetti’s service game was due to get the second set underway.

It is understood a spectator required treatment from doctors after falling ill.

Dumusois stepped down from his umpire’s chair and walked towards the female spectator, checking she was quickly seen to.

While both players returned to their seats as the medical experts tended to the woman, she was helped back to her feet by doctors. A round of applause then ensued as she was escorted out of the stands.

Play was soon back underway, with Musetti leading 5-4 on serve as he targets levelling the match by taking the second set off Fritz. The Italian went on to win in five sets.

Earlier on Wednesday, the day’s other men’s quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur was cancelled after the Aussie pulled out of the match due to injury.

The boyfriend of British No1 Katie Boulter is enjoying the best season of his career but failed to recover from a hip injury he suffered in the very last point of Monday’s four-sets victory over Arthur Fils in the fourth round.

Djokovic now gets as bye to the semi-finals, where he will play Musetti.

Daniil Medvedev faces defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the other semi-final, both of which take place on Friday.
