Wimbledon 2023 LIVE: Andy Murray eases to victory as Roger Federer and Kate Middleton watch on
Andy Murray returned to action at Wimbledon with a straight-sets victory over Ryan Peniston under the royal eye of Roger Federer and the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton. Murray raced to a 6-3 6-0 6-1 victory in just over two hours as the eight-time Wimbledon champion Federer made a special guest appearance on Centre Court to mark his retirement from the sport last September.
Murray had too much for his fellow Brit and advances to the second round on Thursday, but he will have to wait to find out if he plays Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem next after all of the action on the outside courts was washed out by rain. It left Dan Evans taking on Quentin Halys in a match that was moved to Centre, but the Brit was unable to overturn a two-set deficit after Cameron Norrie began his campaign with a battling four-set win.
Defending champion Elena Rybakina recovered from a slow start to defeat Shelby Rogers in three sets, while second Aryna Sabalenka returned to Wimbledon with a thumping straight-sets win over Panna Udvardy. Last year’s runner-up Ons Jabeur also advanced while Carlos Alcaraz was far too strong for Jeremy Chardy.

Andy Murray earns royal approval to begin Wimbledon in clinical style

Ryan Peniston wasn’t dreaming but there were moments on Centre Court where it must have felt like he was. Not only was the 27-year-old British wildcard facing his childhood hero Andy Murray on the second day of Wimbledon, but Roger Federer was in the first row, sitting next to Kate Middleton. It was quite the sight: the king of Wimbledon and the future Queen, sharing jokes and engaging in almost constant conversation, the best of friends.
This was an impressively straight-forward afternoon for Murray, a welcome opener to shake off any nerves and loosen the limbs ahead of the sterner to tests to come. Afterwards, Federer gave Murray’s straight-sets victory a royal seal of approval.

The key ingredient making Carlos Alcaraz tennis’ next best showman after Wimbledon win
Tuesday 4 July 2023 21:59 , Kieran Jackson
Poor old Jeremy Chardy. Go out against the best in the business, they said. What match is experience for youthful exuberance, they said. Announcing his retirement from singles ahead of Wimbledon, the 36-year-old journeyman had the sort-of glamour match-up athletes in their final years either love or loathe. Sadly for Chardy, world number one Carlos Alcaraz gave him little choice in the matter.
For a long while, it seemed set to be a demolition job on Court 1. In fact, it seemed genuinely plausible that a triple bagel – which has not been achieved in a main-draw Grand Slam match since 1993 – was on the cards. Alcaraz, tennis’ next star prodigy turn dominant force, wrapped up the first set in just 22 minutes. The Roger Federer fanfare over on Centre Court had not even started.
In the end, much owed to Chardy’s valiant resilience in what proved to be his final set of singles tennis, the world No 1 had to settle for conceding seven games, on his way to a 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 victory. A few hairy moments in the third set may, over the course of the fortnight, prove useful. Not every point will be with a favourable scoreboard in his favour, particularly on grass at what is only Alcaraz’s third Wimbledon.

Andy Murray pleased with ‘ruthless’ Wimbledon display
Tuesday 4 July 2023 21:43 , Jamie Braidwood
Andy Murray on his performance after beating Ryan Peniston 6-3 6-0 6-1: “I didn’t start the match how I would have liked. It’s always different conditions playing under the roof. Especially when you consider last few days have been quite cool, pretty breezy outdoors, then playing in those conditions is a bit different.
“As the match went on, unforced errors, I cut them out. I was pretty ruthless at the beginning of the second and third sets. There was no sort of dip in intensity or anything. I got ahead early in those sets, did well. So, yeah, I was pleased with everything, apart from the beginning.”
On being watched by Roger Federer: “I saw him briefly when I came off the court. Yeah, I mean, obviously like during the Laver Cup last year, he was obviously sitting on the side watching the match there. I only remember one other time having him there, like I said, on the court when I played Stan Wawrinka in the Olympics. Obviously brilliant to have him around the event. I’m pretty sure he will be around the sport a lot. I know he loves tennis. And, yeah, great to have him back here.”
Wimbledon 2023: Cameron Norrie vs Tomas Machac
Tuesday 4 July 2023 19:51 , Jamie Braidwood
Cameron Norrie after defeating Tomas Machac 6-3 4-6 6-1 6-4: “Coming out onto the court today brought a smile to my face, being back at Wimbledon. The first set I was enjoying it and playing a really good level. Second set he didn’t give me much and I dropped a bit. He made it difficult for me, but I loved it under the roof and enjoyed the atmosphere.
“ In the past two years that was me waiting around in the rain. It was nice making a run last night and earning the advantage to play on this court. It wasn’t straight forward and I had to battle hard but I’m glad I got it done.”

Wimbledon order of play and Wednesday’s schedule
Tuesday 4 July 2023 20:42 , Jamie Braidwood
Wimbledon will hope for more on-court action on day three after rain washed out all outside matches on Tuesday. Consistent rain throughout the afternoon meant that only matches held on Centre Court and Court One were completed, leaving organisers needing to play catch-up.
The stacked day of action will be highlighted by Britain’s Jodie Burrage taking to Centre Court for the first time, while Novak Djokovic looks to continue his winning run at WImbledon against the Australian grass-court specialist Jordan Thompson.
Burrage secured her first ever win at Wimbledon on Monday and plays the 11th seed Daria Kasatkina in the opening match, while world No 1 Iga Swiatek faces Sara Sorribes Torm.
Heather Watson will meet 10th seed Barbora Krejcikova on Court One while Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune are also in action as they take on the British wildcards Arthur Fery and George Loffhagen respectively.

Wimbledon 2023: Andy Murray wins in straight sets

Andy Murray 6-3 6-0 6-1 Ryan Peniston
Murray was just too good for his fellow British opponent.
Peniston put up a good fight in the first set, and there were some thrilling rallies throughout, but Murray stepped up to go through into the second round.
He needed two match points to do it, but the result was never in doubt.
As Tim Henman described it it was a “clinical” performance from Murray as he “went through the gears”.

Having fought back into the game, it was Murray who had set point, but he missed the drop shot, hitting it into the tramlines, and the game went to deuce.
Despite that, Murray holds to take what is looking like an unassailable two set lead.

It’s Peniston’s second serves that are causing him problems, and have been throughout the match, just winning 32% of points on it.
Peniston served his first ace of the match, at 88mph, but followed it up with a double fault.
And Murray takes the game, just one more game needed for the Scot to take the second set.

After a difficult start, Murray seems to have found his groove, with Peniston struggling to find a way back into this match now.
Murray challenged a call when needing just one more point, and will have one challenge less as the match continues, but that decision allowed Peniston back into the game.
He won three points in a row to take it to deuce, but an ace to secure advantage and a fortunate bounce of the net, and the second set is now looking out of reach.
On another note, I am really enjoying that kid’s homemade sign in the crowd that the camera keeps flicking to. It’s very well-coloured. There is also a little girl with a Scotland flag on her cheek.

Wimbledon apologise after people left waiting over 10 hours in queue
Tuesday 4 July 2023 16:54 , Kieran Jackson
Wimbledon have issued an apology after people in the queue were forced to wait over 10 hours to enter the grounds on Monday.
Fans made their irritation known on social media as slow security resulted in many people waiting for hours on end on day one of the tournament.
Executives at the All England Club have been nervous about the potential for a protest during the fortnight, particularly from Just Stop Oil after they invaded the pitch at the Ashes Test at Lord’s last week, following previous incidents at the Grand National and World Snooker Championship.
Bags were being heavily scrutinised upon entry to the grounds, with chalk dust and powders the latest items banned by Wimbledon, as well as cable ties, glue, chains and padlocks on the list of prohibited items.

GAME, SET AND MATCH - Elena Rybakina 4-6 6-1 6-2 Shelby Rogers
It looked tense for a while there for the defending champion but she found her form when it mattered!
Rybakina is though to round two after a tough encounter under the roof on Centre! A return into the net by Rogers finishes the match off.

And that could be that! Rybakina pounces on further errors from Rogers, putting a series a deep balls to the baseline that her opponent can’t keep in play. Rogers finds an ace with a challenge to save a second break point, but Rybakina takes her chance at the next opportunity.

The American is able to hold to love and then shows some further signs on stabilising with a forehand winner that leads to the second hold. It keeps her within touching distance of Rybakina, but breaking that serve is going to be challenging.

GAME, SET AND MATCH - Carlos Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 7-5 Jeremy Chardy
The world No 1 gets it done with an ace out wide - and is into round two!
Chardy’s singles career comes to an end and he gets a mammoth reception as he leaves Court 1 - his opponent among the people clapping.
“I’m very lucky to get this love at every tournament, wherever I go,” says Alcaraz afterwards. “I’m a very lucky guy.”

The rain is getting heavier at Wimbledon and it’s starting to look like it could be a complete washout on the outside courts today. If it clears, there could be time later on for the matches that started this morning, but those who were scheduled for later in the day will surely not be in action today.

Break! Brilliant from Rybakina, who keeps up the momentum to break Rogers at the start of the decider. The 24-year-old has her timing back and connects with a thumping backhand to bring up three break points. Then Rybakina clips the paint with a forehand winner down the line - it was called out, but Rybakina challenges and wins the point. Stunning shot.

Elena Rybakina 4-6 6-1 Shelby Rogers*
Set! Rogers was able to avoid the bagel, but Rybakina makes no mistake to close it out. What a total contrast to the first set. Rogers completely lost her forehand and serve, while Rybakina looked unstoppable on hers. The American made far too many errors in that set, with 10 in total to Rybakina’s three. She heads off for a break before the decider.

*Carlos Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 4-5 Jeremy Chardy
A more routine service game for Alcaraz this time, before Chardy is back under pressure on his own serve.
All credit to the Frenchman, battling in what could be his final set of professional singles tennis. Deuces aplenty, but he holds. Just.

Elena Rybakina 4-6 5-0 Shelby Rogers*
Incredible turnaround on Centre Court. Rybakina is all over Rogers at the net and then squeezes out two more errors from the American’s forehand as she breaks to love. Suddenly, it looks she’s a defending champion again.

I hope you weren’t panicking, Alcaraz fans!
While the Spaniard was visibly irritated after seeing 0-30 cut to 30-30, a backhand winner on return and limp Chardy slice into the net sees the world number one break straight back.
Bitter blow for Chardy.

Elena Rybakina 4-6 3-0 Shelby Rogers*
Rybakina also finds eight of ten first serves to start the second set. The 24-year-old wins almost every point she plays behind the first serve and it’s helped change the momentum of the match.
Wimbledon 2023: Elena Rybakina vs Shelby Rogers latest score
Tuesday 4 July 2023 14:35 , Jamie Braidwood
*Elena Rybakina 4-6 2-0 Shelby Rogers
Break! Just like in the first set, there’s an opening break of serve to start the second! Rybakina takes advantage of a couple of double faults from Rogers, as the American drops accuracy on her serve. Rybakina blasts the forehand winner on the fourth deuce and then Rogers puts a forehand into the net.
That’s a big boost for Rybakina - but Rogers rather gifted that away.

Chardy breaks!
Wow, out of nothing, a tetchy game from Alcaraz. A few loose shots, and some big hitting from Chardy, and the Frenchman eventually takes it with his fourth break point chance, slamming a return bang on the baseline!
Who saw this coming?!
Wimbledon 2023: Elena Rybakina vs Shelby Rogers latest score
Tuesday 4 July 2023 14:22 , Jamie Braidwood
Elena Rybakina 4-6 Shelby Rogers
Set! Wow - Shelby Rogers takes the opening set against the defending champion. The American has been serving so well, and it allows her to take the first two points behind a one-two punch, with clean forehand winners out wide. It’s sealed with an ace up the middle and Rybakina is in trouble.

Elena Rybakina 4-5 Shelby Rogers*
Rybakina goes big on a couple of returns and finds her mark, but Rogers continues to exert control on the service games. The American is striking the ball so cleanly on the forehand side and picks up another couple of winners, even as Rybakina holds to stay in the set.
Rogers will serve for the first-set lead...

A hold to love. Ruthless and clincal, sealed with a pair of storming forehands.
World No 1 two sets up inside 55 minutes and cruising to the second round.
A reminder that this match is the last of French veteran Chardy’s career - can he muster any late fight here?
Wimbledon 2023: Elena Rybakina vs Shelby Rogers latest score
Tuesday 4 July 2023 13:59 , Jamie Braidwood
Elena Rybakina 2-3 Shelby Rogers*
Rybakina settles behind her powerful serve and holds thanks to a couple of easy points. She had a look at 15-30 on the Rogers serve, but the American’s timing is looking far sharper and she is able to hold from the baseline rallies.

*Carlos Alcaraz 6-0 5-2 Jeremy Chardy
Massive applause under the roof on Court 1 as Chardy claims his second game of the match, holding to 30 after a few big serves.

Carlos Alcaraz 6-0 5-1 Jeremy Chardy*
A tough opening 45 minutes, it’s fair to say, for Jeremy Chardy.
Carlos Alcaraz, the world No 1, utterly dominant at the moment on Court 1. A huge cheer went out when Chardy claimed his first game of the match in this second set... but there’s been no let-up since.
Just monstrous hitting from the Spaniard!

Elena Rybakina 0-1 Shelby Rogers*
Break! Well, well. Rybakina is broken on her first game as defending champion. Rybakina came into the tournament after a “tough” build up, as she continued to deal with the affects of a virus that forced her to pull out of the French Open last month.
And the American Rogers goes on the attack from the off, launching a huge couple of returns down the line to break Rybakina. That will not settle the defending champion, who could be vulnerable here.

And that’s that! I was maybe expecting a speech of some kind, but that was a nice moment as Centre Court showed its appreciation for the King of Wimbledon.
And indeed, Federer is looking very regal as he takes his place in the front row of the Royal Box - where he will watch the day’s play.
We start with the defending women’s champion, Elena Rybakina, against the American Shelby Rodgers.

Wimbledon 2023: Carlos Alcaraz vs Jeremy Chardy underway
Tuesday 4 July 2023 13:20 , Jamie Braidwood
Just stepped outside on my way to Centre Court and the weather in the grounds is absolutely foul: cold, wet drizzle - not what we’re used to at SW19.
The good news is we now have play once again: Carlos Alcaraz is underway on Court One against the Frenchman Jeremy Chardy - who is playing his last ever tournament before retirement.
Alcaraz has high hopes after winning the Queen’s title to take the top seed ahead of Wimbledon and the young Spaniard is already a break up.

Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton on what to expect from today’s Roger Federer ceremony:
“I’m pleased to say that Roger will be with us tomorrow and we will have a special celebratory moment on Centre Court before play starts just to honour him as the man holding the most gentlemen’s singles titles here at Wimbledon.
“For those lucky enough to have a seat on Centre Court tomorrow I’d encourage them to get into their seats about 1.15pm and we’ll have a moment just to celebrate his achievements and to say thank you for all the memories.”
Wimbledon 2023: Why Andy Murray is still ‘our champion’
Tuesday 4 July 2023 12:34 , Jamie Braidwood
Ten years: who knows where they went. Even now, watching back Andy Murray’s victory in the 2013 Wimbledon final manages to tie a knot in your stomach. The pressure and weight of history, climaxing in that tortuous final game, feel just as overwhelming, right until that last shot from Novak Djokovic drifts long in the haze of Centre Court. That winning moment – “the waiting is over!” – still raises goosebumps on your arm.
The tenth anniversary of Murray’s defining moment, and arguably the greatest individual triumph in British sporting history, naturally brings time for reflection: a celebration of how an awkward, gangly outsider who struggled to be fully embraced by the public, persevered through heartbreak and expectation to become a much-loved champion, a player universally respected for his values and commitment to equality and fairness as much as his determination to end Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s singles winner.
Ten years on, Murray has never felt more like our champion.

Wimbledon 2023: Katie Boulter vs Daria Saville latest score

RAIN! The heavens have opened and umbrellas are going up around the grounds as the covers are pulled over the courts.
Play has been suspended on all courts. Hopefully this doesn’t last for long, but that might be a bit optimistic looking at this afternoon’s forecast.
Wimbledon 2023: Katie Boulter vs Daria Saville latest score
Tuesday 4 July 2023 12:10 , Jamie Braidwood
*Katie Boulter 5-6 Daria Saville
Saville passes a a nervy moment as Boulter gets back to 30-30 on the Australian’s serve, but she manages to get the hold as the British No 1 floats a forehand long. Saville is certainly standing up to the challenge here and is making life difficult for Boulter, who will need to hold serve to stay in the set.
Wimbledon 2023: George Loffhagen vs Holger Rune latest score
Tuesday 4 July 2023 12:07 , Kieran Jackson
George Loffhagen 6-7(4) Holger Rune*
A blow for the Brit, with the sixth seed just proving more consistent and on the front-foot in that tie-break - he takes it 7-4.

After those long deuce games we’ve had a run of holds on Court 18. Boulter thumps down a couple of big serves as Jodie Burrage, who won yesterday, claps in encouragement.
The stars are certainly out today: Roger Federer has arrived ahead of his special celebration on Centre Court this afternoon.

Break! A fourth game in a row goes to deuce and this time Saville can take her chance. The Australian plays a lovely forehand winner down the line to get back on terms.
Play is still going on - it was perhaps just a few early spits, but it does feel like a downpour is on the way.
Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, is watching Boulter alongside the former British No 1 Laura Robson.

Why did Venus Williams not shake hands with umpire at Wimbledon?
Tuesday 4 July 2023 10:46 , Kieran Jackson
Venus Williams refused to shake hands with the chair umpire after her first-round loss at Wimbledon on Monday because she disagreed with a contentious call which ended the match.
Williams, playing in the women’s singles at the All England Club for a record 24th time, was hampered by an early slip in her match against Elina Svitolina on Centre Court and succumbed to defeat.
Yet the match did end in controversial circumstances.
