Wild's Marcus Johansson Exits Oilers Game After Connor McDavid Caught Him With A Chicken Wing

ST. PAUL - The injuries just keep coming for the Wild. Marcus Johansson was the latest Wild player to get hurt. It came at the end of the second period.

Johansson, 34, has played in 44 of the team's 45 games this year. He has five goals and 16 points.

The 6-foot-1 forward was in the defensive zone when he caught an elbow from Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid. Johansson immediately fell over and his helmet also came off later.

There was no penalty on the play despite McDavid sticking his elbow out, on what looked like to be on purpose. Wild head coach John Hynes wanted an explanation from referee Dan O'Rourke but didn't get one.

After the period ended, Mats Zuccarello and Joel Eriksson Ek went over to Chris Lee to get a word on why it wasn't called.

Johansson played 10:49 of the game and did not return for the third period.

"You know what? I don't even want to go down that road because it would probably infuriate you more than it infuriates me right now, so I'm just going to bypass that," Wild head coach John Hynes said on what referee Chris Lee said to him on the hit. "Similar to the other game, not a good answer. Let me put it that way."

Jake Middleton called the elbow "horses--t." He went on to say "if that’s Ryan Hartman or Marcus Foligno, you know what would happen. I don’t care if it’s the best player in the world.”

Joel Eriksson Ek said that Lee told him that Johansson got hit in the face with his own stick.

Hynes confirmed after the game that Johansson will be out for some time with an upper-body injury.

“Yeah, I mean I don’t want to say for sure what it is, but I would anticipate he would be, put it that way," Hynes said. "I don’t usually get all the total reports but I would anticipate that would be it.”
