Why New York Islanders Brought On Tony DeAngelo – If He Clears Waivers
The New York Islanders announced the signing of defenseman Tony DeAngelo.
GM Lou Lamoriello signed him to a one-year contract pro-rated at the NHL league minimum of $775,000.
The 29-year-old comes off a 34-game stint with St. Petersburg of the KHL. He scored six goals and recorded 26 assists for 32 points, fourth-best in the league among defensemen. He must clear NHL waivers before he can be activated since he played in another league this season.

Before his time in the KHL, DeAngelo played 371 NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes.
The 19th pick of the 2014 draft played 31 games in the 2023-24 campaign with the Hurricanes. He scored three goals and provided eight helpers for 11 points. Additionally, he recorded two assists in his nine playoff games with the Hurricanes.
DeAngelo is an offensive D-man known for his scoring ability from the back end and for contributing to the power play from the blueline.
After Noah Dobson's injury, #Isles were in the market for a mobile defender.

As a right-handed blueliner, he'll be able to help with the loss of Noah Dobson. The D-man suffered an injury on Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets going for a hit on Cole Sillinger. The Blue Jackets center knocked him down, and Dobson was slow to get up.
He was diagnosed with a lower-body injury after an awkward fall near the boards. Eventually, it was announced that he would be out of the lineup on a week-to-week basis.
Dobson leads the team's defense in scoring with six goals and 24 points in 46 games. He's also logged plenty of ice time for Long Island, averaging just over 24 minutes this season.
With his loss, the Islanders will need to make up the points somewhere in the lineup, which may be the intention of the DeAngelo signing. The Islanders are 28th in goals-for per game at 2.65.
