Why A Halted Miller Trade Could Make This Week Awkward For The Canucks
Trading players in the NHL is complicated. From creating trade packages to managing no-move clauses, finalizing a deal between two organizations can take days or even longer. Even when it seems that a trade is imminent, there is also the chance one side pulls the deal, which is what happened this past weekend with J.T. Miller.

According to a report by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Vancouver Canucks were very close to moving Miller prior to Saturday's game against the Edmonton. The trade involved the New York Rangers and was so close that there was a chance Miller would not play on Saturday. In the end, the trade fell apart, resulting in Miller playing Saturday and having an impactful game versus the Oilers.

As mentioned, trades falling apart is not uncommon, but it can create awkward situations for the players involved. For example, Miller was all over social media on Sunday as he was not present at the Canucks annual Dice & Ice Gala. While Miller missed the event due to reportedly being sick with food poisoning, it didn't stop a social media storm, with many voicing their opinions on various platforms.
Another awkward situation was after Saturday's win during the post-game media scrums. Due to the reports, Miller and his teammates were asked multiple questions regarding his future in Vancouver. While Miller refused to discuss the rumours in depth, he did say, "I’m planning on being a Canuck today, tomorrow. Whatever happens, happens. I'm focused on the next game."
"We came up with some new looks on the power play and we stuck to it. Power play got us momentum...When we buy-in, we normally have success."

This all leads into Monday when Vancouver returns to the ice after a day off. Regardless of whether Miller is requested to speak, the topic of trade will come up with both teammates and coach Rick Tocchet. Despite some objections from those on social media, this line of questioning will occur as it is currently not just a major story surrounding the team but one that has gauged league-wide interest.
At this point, it is very clear that the Canucks are looking to move Miller as soon as possible. Until then, though, there will be some awkwardness surrounding the team. With a massive week ahead, including a rematch with Edmonton on Thursday, Vancouver's players will need to find a way to get past this awkwardness and shut out the noise in order to have a successful week.
