Why Brett Favre doesn’t think Raiders’ Davante Adams will repeat his big stats of 2021

Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre said he would “be shocked” if Davante Adams had the kind of eye-popping numbers this season that he had last year with the Green Bay Packers.

Adams had a career-high 1,553 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in 2021. The prior season, Adams totaled a career-high 18 touchdowns and 1,374 yards.

The Las Vegas Raiders acquired Adams from the Packers in March after he spent the past eight seasons in Green Bay.

With the change of scenery, Favre just doesn’t think Adams will repeat those numbers. Down the road? Maybe.

“That’s not to say he’s not a great player because he is a tremendous player and we’ll see that with Las Vegas,” Favre told TMZ.

“But it’s just hard to shift gears, especially from a player as prolific as Aaron Rodgers. I’d be shocked if he had the same year he’s had the previous year. That’s not to say he can’t do it, but I would be shocked.”

But it’s not as if Adams and his new quarterback, Derek Carr, are strangers. They starred together and put up big numbers at Fresno State.

Those college numbers included 233 receptions for 3,301 yards and 38 touchdowns for Adams in two seasons with the Bulldogs.

In the final season at Fresno State, the wideout had 1,719 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Granted, that is college football, with the Bulldogs playing in the Mountain West Conference, but they still posted numbers that others would have liked to achieve.

Carr and Adams were a “dynamic duo” at Fresno State and continued to work out together after they were taken in the 2014 NFL draft.

They know what to expect from each other and perhaps that will ease any adjustment period, even if both agree there’s work to do in Las Vegas.

So there is reason — and recent proof — to believe Carr and Adams again can be productive together. The college-to-pros connection certainly worked well for Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, who starred at Louisiana State before leading the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl last season.

ESPN’s Mike Clay is another of the mild skeptics.

He projected Adams to finish with 1,168 yards and nine touchdowns in the 2022 NFL season. Clay is projecting Carr to throw for 4,199 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Solid numbers, to be sure, but maybe not quite superstar, or Super Bowl, level totals.

“No disrespect to Davante at all — zero disrespect. I do think that Davante will make Derek Carr better and, in time, they will be a dynamic duo,” Favre said. ““Now will it be the duo that Aaron and Davante had? Time will tell.”

Carr had been without a true No. 1 -caliber receiver for several seasons, but he continued to put up decent number while throwing to the likes of Hunter Renfrow, Zay Jones, Nelson Agholor and tight end Darren Waller, who all had big seasons catching throws from Carr.

Carr, who coincidentally wears No. 4 because of Favre, finished last season with a career-high 4,804 passing yards. In fact, Carr’s passing yardage has increased each year since 2017. He had a career-high 32 touchdowns in 2015 and finished with 23 TDs last season.

Maybe the Favre forecast and other doubters will give Carr and Adams a little extra motivation for the upcoming season?

“I think Derek Carr’s a very good quarterback, but he’s not in Aaron’s league yet,” Favre said. “And may never be, and that’s no disrespect either, but I do think that Davante owes a great deal of gratitude to Aaron and the Packers drafting him.”
