Why Arsenal, Liverpool’s £66M-Rated Target Suits Premier League Amid PSG Exit Rumors
Paris Saint-Germain took a short-term approach by loaning Xavi Simons to RB Leipzig for another season. However, a more permanent decision about his future, potentially a transfer, is expected next summer.
In September, journalist Christian Falk reported that Manchester City and Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Simons’ situation. Earlier in the summer, top clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Manchester United had also shown interest in the highly-rated midfielder.
Sport Bild claims that Leipzig are keen to make Simons’ move permanent as soon as January. However, the player, who is under contract with PSG until 2027, seems uninterested in returning to Paris.
Leipzig faces a major obstacle in meeting PSG’s €80 million asking price, which could prove too steep for the German club. Moreover, The Athletic revealed that Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Real Madrid are among the most likely destinations for Simons.
Xavi Simons could thrive in the Premier League
Simons has been linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool, and former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes the Dutch star would adapt well to Premier League football.
“Yes. For his size, he’s quite physical and he’s very good technically, so I believe he’s the type of player that would thrive in the Premier League,” Johnson said (h/t The Mirror).
“He’s playing at the top level, for a good team and we always say it’s risky signing a player that’s never played in the Premier League, but with a player like him, I don’t think it’s risky at all. £66 million’s not too bad for a player that’s going to be knocking on the door for a starting place in the team.”
Nonetheless, Sport Bild recently reported that PSG are open to offers for Simons, and talks between the two clubs have already begun. While Al-Khelaïfi initially valued the player at €80 million, Leipzig has reportedly proposed a €50 million deal, including a resale percentage for PSG.
