WHL coach Kevin Constantine suspended amid independent investigation into conduct
The Wenatchee Wild coach is not allowed to have any contact with any member of the team while the investigation "regarding his conduct" is ongoing.
The Western Hockey League has suspended Wenatchee Wild head coach Kevin Constantine after alleged violations of league regulations and policies.
“Constantine was suspended on Sunday after the WHL’s independent reporting channel received a complaint regarding his conduct,” the league said in a statement released Monday.
The former NHL bench boss is not permitted to have any contact with any member of the Wild while the independent investigation is ongoing. The WHL did not disclose details on the nature of the complaint or alleged incident.
It the release, the league said Wild management and the WHL's Security Network met with players on the team "to address the situation and offer support."
"The WHL will take all necessary steps to protect the player experience and ensure strict compliance with WHL Regulations and Policies."
Wenatchee — formerly known as the Winnipeg Ice before being relocated earlier this summer — hired Constantine on July 13.
The 64-year-old coach has a checkered past.
Ahead of the 2016-17 WHL season, Constantine, then coach of the Everett Silvertips, was suspended four games and fined $5,000 over a punishment he delivered to his team following a game against the Tri-City Americans. Constantine made his players (including healthy-scratched players who weren’t even dressed that night, as The Athletic's Scott Wheeler noted) eat their post-game meals and ride the bus several hours home while still in full equipment.
During the 1996-97 season, Constantine, then an assistant with the Calgary Flames, was suspended one game after confronting an Edmonton Oilers fan who poured a drink on the head of his fellow assistant coach, Guy Lapointe.
Constantine has been an NHL head coach in the past, serving as the bench boss for the San Jose Sharks, Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils. Constantine has also been a head coach at the AHL and WHL levels, while also making pitstops in the Swiss League and Austrian League. He last coached in North America during the 2016-17 season with the Silvertips.
