WHL At The 2025 World Juniors: Close Call For Canada
As the final day of 2024 comes to a close, the 2025 World Juniors begins its transition into the quarterfinal round. As part of the last full set of round robin games, fans were treated to exciting contests throughout.
Sweden knocks off Team Czechia
In a last-ditch effort, Adam Jecho (Edmonton Oil Kings) notched an assist to bring Czechia within a 2-1 deficit but Sweden would tack on two more and skate away with a 4-2 win. Another Oil King, Miroslav Holinka recorded four shots and Vojtech Port (Lethbridge Hurricanes) had himself a solid game making sure the puck was moved efficiently and made several smart breakout passes.
Team Finland blanks Latvia
Medicine Hat Tigers blueliner Veeti Vaisanen tallied his first point of the tournament on the opening goal, and Julius Miettinien (Everett Silvertips) was a solid playmaker all afternoon as Finland shuts out Team Latvia by a score of 3-0.
Switzerland brushes off Kazakhstan
In a high shooting affair for the Swiss, Leo Braillard (Lethbridge Hurricanes) came second in team shots, with a whopping total of five on the afternoon. Despite nbot finding the scoresheet, Braillard and the Swiss were able to knock off Team Kazakhstan 3-1 and improve their standing in Group B.
Penalty troubles sink Team Canada against USA
Brayden Yager (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and Tanner Molendyk (Saskatoon Blades) both collected an assist on Canada's lone goal of the game, but the USA proved to be too much as the hosts fall by a score of 4-1. Gavin McKenna (Medicine Hat Tigers) and Berkly Catton (Spokane Chiefs) continue with their dangerous looks at even strength , but were unable to convert.
Teams will have a day off on January 1, before resuming with the quarterfinal round on Thursday.
