Ex-Premier League striker Troy Deeney has suggested that Mohamed Salah’s previous contract extension could now be causing Liverpool problems.

The Egyptian King penned a contract extension with Liverpool in July 2022 but now only has a year left on that deal.

When Liverpool last extended Salah’s contract they offered him a reported club-record £350,000 a week making him the highest earner at the club.

Salah has been one of the Premier League’s best players since he arrived at Liverpool in 2017 but now the 32-year-old could leave Merseyside for free if his contract isn’t extended again.

What did Deeney say?

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Watford striker Deeney revealed that Salah’s previous contract extension had ‘rocked the boat’ at Liverpool and that now the club are in a difficult position.

Deeney said: “There was talk in football that [Salah’s] extension rocked the boat a little bit, because it was so far above everybody else that it kind of made Liverpool go hold on – everybody else came to the forefront like ‘where’s my money?’”

Salah is not the only Liverpool player out of contract in the summer, Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold also both have expiring deals and head coach Arne Slot has been fairly reluctant to discuss any contract negotiations publicly.

Although it probably won’t be as big an issue for Van Dijk, who is now 33, Alexander-Arnold will be looking for better terms.

Salah’s electric start

Salah has started the season in fine form, scoring three and providing three assists in Liverpool’s first three games and the Player of the Month nominee is a key reason Slot’s side currently hold a perfect record in the Premier League.

However, following the Reds' last game, a 3-0 victory over Manchester United, Salah came out and publicly stated that he was yet to sit down with anyone from the club to discuss a contract extension.

This was followed by the news that Liverpool are planning to open contract negotiations with Salah in the near future and the Anfield faithful will be hoping that deals for Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold are in the works too.

Salah’s mammoth wage could be a roadblock but Liverpool supporters will want Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards to do their best to resolve the situation.
