Where The Capitals' Goaltending Situation Stands With Team Reportedly In Talks With Both Lindgren & Thompson; 'Urgency' To Ink Latter

The Washington Capitals are starting to get a clearer picture of their future between the pipes, as the team has reportedly been in talks with both pending UFA netminders Charlie Lindgren and Logan Thompson.

Pierre LeBrun said on TSN's "Early Trading" that Washington has been in contact with both Lindgren and Thompson's agents, though there is "urgency" to get Thompson under contract sooner rather than later.

"I think there's some urgency there. I think the Caps would like to get something done, if all goes well, before the 4 Nations break next month," LeBrun said.

Thompson has put on a stellar showing in his first year with Washington, going 22-3-2 with a .925 save percentage and 2.09 GAA. He ranks second in the NHL in save percentage behind only reigning Vezina winner Connor Hellebuyck, and he leads the league in goals saved above expected.

The 27-year-old made five straight starts for Washington and took over the No. 1 role when Lindgren suffered an upper-body injury on Jan. 10 that held him out for a week, but the team continued its netminding rotation on Thursday with Lindgren starting against the Seattle Kraken.

Lindgren has played in 21 games this season, going 10-8-2 with a .901 save percentage and 2.65 GAA following his standout campaign in 2023-24 that saw him take over the starting role and earn Hart and Vezina consideration to boot.

While there's said to be a desire to get a deal done quickly for Thompson, Washington has been "trading carefully" with this situation, per LeBrun, as the team is concerned that signing one before the other could impact locker room chemistry.
