What should we expect from the Watt brothers as 'Ultimate Tag' reality competition hosts?

The Watt brothers are a competitive trio, from making the playoffs to leading the league in sacks to getting it right for a Gatorade commercial.

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, Los Angeles Chargers fullback Derek Watt and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt will bring that competitive spirit to a new show for Fox.

Watt brothers to host playground show

Fox ordered the show “Ultimate Tag” for its 2020 lineup, according to Deadline, during upfronts Monday morning. The show is produced by Znak & Co and will include J.J. Watt as an executive producer.

Deadline describes the show as a “high-octane” series set to launch in 2020 while Fox categorized it as a “thrilling, energy-sapping competition.” The show will focus on participants playing the playground game of tag. Rob Wade, Fox Entertainment president of alternative entertainment and specials, told Deadline the show will go nicely with WWE. Fox recently signed a five-year deal to the rights.

“I was looking at the acquisition of WWE and some of the sports programming we have and I believe that it sits closely to that audience and is an opportunity for families to sit around and watch that.”

WWE’s “Smackdown Live” will make its Fox debut in October.

Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier compared “Ultimate Tag” to “The Masked Singer” as both are live and look-live programming. “The Masked Singer” became the highest-rated unscripted debut on any network since “The X-Factor” in 2011, per Realscreen. An average of 9.4 million people watched as T.J. Watt’s former Steelers teammate Antonio Brown concluded a bizarre day with a Hippo reveal on the show’s premiere.

What can we expect from the Watt brothers?

J.J., 30, was the only child for a short while before Derek, 26, and T.J., 24, crashed his party. The youngest Watt brothers are 23 months apart.

That leaves an intense longstanding rivalry between Derek and T.J., who played together both in high school and at Wisconsin. J.J. is more of the older brother to which each were incessantly compared and that holds its own level of fun.

That doesn’t stop the brotherly love and sibling rivalry. They take family cruises together, an extension of extravagant childhood trips that Derek told ESPN helped strengthen the family bond.

They’re so close both younger brothers are looking to build houses on J.J.’s acreage in Wisconsin, per a feature by The Ringer.

“That’s the dream," T.J. told The Ringer, "to have all of us on one compound, one neighborhood, whatever you want to call it."

The three have a group text in which they trash talk, even if that means J.J. leaving messages for T.J. and Derek to read after their “Sunday Night Football” match-up last fall.

If “Ultimate Tag” is true to the glimpses fans have already seen of the Watts, viewers have a lot of competitive fun and jabbing in store. There’s likely references to their competition on the field throughout the years. Maybe viewers will get to hear about who is the better uncle after Derek and his wife welcomed their first child in February.

As T.J. Watt teased, “stay tuned.”

Hopefully at the very least there will be gems such as the outtakes from that Gatorade commercial that saw J.J. and Derek making fun of T.J. for his apparel.
