Western Michigan turned to a former player to replace P.J. Fleck.

The Broncos introduced Tim Lester as the team’s new head coach Saturday morning. Lester spent 2016 as the quarterbacks coach at Purdue.

Lester played at Western Michigan from 1996-99. In 1999, the Broncos made the MAC title game. He inherits a team that went 13-0 in the regular season, won the MAC title and lost to Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl.

Fleck was hired as Minnesota’s new head coach earlier this month after the Gophers fired Tracy Claeys.

Lester coached at Western Michigan in 2005 and 2006 under Bill Cubit. Before he coached at Purdue in 2016, Lester was Syracuse’s offensive coordinator in 2014 and 2015 and the head coach at Division III Elmhurst for five seasons. He left the Orange when the team made a coaching change from Scott Shafer to Dino Babers.

WMU hired Fleck before the 2013 season to replace Cubit. After going 1-11 in 2013, the Broncos have been to three-straight bowl games.
