West Ham United are one of the clubs at the front of the queue to sign Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto, according to Radio Catalunya.

The 32-year-old does not have a club after his contract with the Catalans expired on June 30.

Barcelona have reportedly sent him a new deal, with sporting director Deco placing a call to assure him that the contract is still on the table. But Roberto has not given any indication that he will re-sign.

Several clubs are circling for the former Barca captain, and the Hammers are one of them, alongside Aston Villa and Ajax. The report mentions that he is keen on moving to the Premier League.

Roberto has spent his entire career at the Spotify Camp Nou, racking up 373 first-team appearances for the club. He notched 19 goals and 43 assists for the Blaugrana, including that special goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Roberto won seven La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues, six Copa del Reys, and many other honours. He is also an 11-cap Spanish international.

Roberto could be a wise addition for West Ham

Roberto’s availability is a golden opportunity for West Ham. The club can sign him for free, and he’d be a shrewd addition to manager Julen Lopetegui’s squad.

His wealth of experience at the highest level would be a massive bonus for the Hammers as they look to return to Europe after finishing ninth in the Premier League last term.

Also, his versatility would be great to have. He can play right-back and midfield, making him an ideal fit for Lopetegui’s squad. His leadership qualities would undoubtedly bolster the Hammers’ dressing room.

Securing a player of Roberto’s calibre at no transfer fee would be a wise piece of business. It could be a pivotal factor in West Ham’s push for European qualification.
