Yahoo Sports Wesley Sneijder believes he could have been on Messi or Ronaldo’s level if it weren’t for wine
Wesley Sneijder’s soccer career was extremely impressive.
While he sounds pretty content now in retirement, Sneijder believes he could have been even better.
One thing, though, stood in his way from being on Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo’s level.
“I could have become like Messi or Ronaldo. I simply didn’t feel like it,” Sneijder said, via Gianluca Dimarzio.
“I enjoyed my life, maybe I had a glass [of wine] at dinner. Leo and Cristiano are different, they have made many sacrifices. And that’s fine with me. My career, however, was still amazing.”
That’s a pretty bold statement, considering both Messi and Ronaldo are two of the best soccer players in the history of the sport, have 11 Ballon d’Or trophies and countless titles between them. Not only are they household names in soccer, but they have earned their spots among top athletes worldwide.
Sneijder, who retired last year, did accomplish a lot throughout his career. He has five domestic league championships — one in both La Liga and Serie A — a Champions League title and a runner-up finish at the 2010 World Cup with the Netherlands to his name. He called it quits after wrapping up his career with Galatasaray in Turkey and then a one-year stint with Nice in Ligue 1.
Though the 35-year-old is likely kidding, at least a little bit, it’s hard to blame him for choosing wine.
