The Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman has been outstanding on a team that’s faced its fair share of struggles, both on and off the ice.

Werenski’s offensive numbers speak for themselves. Through 37 games, he has 39 points, including 11 goals and 28 assists, putting him second on the team in points, behind only Kirill Marchenko.

He drives play whenever he’s on the ice for his club and is one of the best power-play quarterbacks in the NHL. Additionally, he has stepped up as a great leader, especially with the team’s captain, Boone Jenner, sidelined by injury.

Defensively, Werenski has stepped up in a major way. Logging over 25 minutes a night, he consistently matches up against top competition and continues to excel.

Among defensemen, Werenski ranks third in scoring, trailing only Cale Makar (45) and Quinn Hughes (42). With Hughes sidelined due to injury, Werenski has a strong chance to move into second place in scoring.

The Norris Trophy typically goes to the league’s best all-around defenseman, with scoring often playing a significant role.

However, Norris voters should also consider the overall impact a defenseman has on their team. Werenski’s impact on the Blue Jackets this season has been undeniable.
