These Were The Final Four Names In Contention For Each Of The PWHL's Six Teams

PWHL team names finally have names. And they aren't the names that saw trademarks applied for last Fall. In the end, the PWHL went with the Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montreal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge, and Toronto Sceptres. Those names however could have been the Marmots, Emeralds, Tempests, or Lumieres.

While the PWHL managed to keep the names, for the most part, under wraps leading up to this new announcement, one of their equipment suppliers, Bauer, had each of the PWHL team names published prior to the league's announcement. Bauer also had three additional names on their "placeholder" pages for the PWHL's six teams. With the successful PWHL team name choices and the previously applied for names among each team's four names, it appears these were the four name finalists for each market.

According to Bauer's pages, here are three additional names under consideration in each market.

Montreal Victoire

We know it's the Victoire in Montreal, which translates to Victory in English. The other names listed by Bauer included the originally applied for Montreal Echo, along with the Montreal Lumieres and Montreal Metro. In English, Lumieres translates to Lights.

Toronto Sceptres

Most fans were against the Toronto Torch name given how it is said in French, and its anti-feminist meaning. Toronto will now forever be known as the Toronto Sceptres, but they could have been the Toronto Sentinels or Toronto Tempests.

New York Sirens

As teams are lured into arenas this winter, they'll need to watch out for the deadly song of the New York Sirens. And hopefully visiting teams can get a good night sleep despite the noisy on street sirens of the city. It's a better sounding name (pun intended), than the New York Sound name, likely originally devised to connect Connecticut and Long Island. With the team likely heading out of Connecticut permanently, aside from their practice facility, Sirens was the new choice. The others? New York whittled their names down to New York Rush and New York Odyssey, along with Sound and Sirens.

Minnesota Frost

Originally proposed to be the Minnesota Superior, a slightly confusing name given Wisconsin and Michigan's Superior ties to Lake Superior, but instead the league went with something Minnesotans are well accustomed to, Frost. There was the chance however that Minnesota would be the lone team in the league to use an animal as their nickname, as Minnesota Marmots was a finalist, as were the Minnesota Monarchs.

Boston Fleet

Boston ended up with a wicked awesome name in the Boston Fleet. It could have been the linguistically confusing Boston Wicked, but the league turned on their brooms and brought in a Fleet of hockey players to Boston's harbour. The Irish influence of the city almost emerged with the Boston Emeralds being a finalist, with the fourth name that will remain unused being the Boston Blitz.

Ottawa Charge

You can almost hear Ottawa's massive crowds cheering "Charge" with in unison. History will remain in the past as the team avoided the use of the Ottawa Alert name, an homage to the Ottawa Alerts, one of women's hockey's top teams in the first quarter of the 20th century. Perhaps linking to the parliamentary connections in the city, another name under consideration was the Ottawa Guard, with the remaining finalist being the Ottawa Advance.
