It was confirmed on Monday that Manchester United had opened talks with Lecce to try and hash out a deal for left-back Patrick Dorgu.

A natural occupant to the left-wing back role, Dorgu has been identified to properly carry out the attacking prowess down the flank that Ruben Amorim desires. Currently, he’s relying on right-sided Diogo Dalot to do so, and it’s safe to say that it isn’t going to plan.

“United’s move for Dorgu, who is left-footed, indicates there is an internal desire to add attacking oomph from wing-back, and more generally back Amorim’s tactical idea,” said Laurie Whitwell in today’s update from The Athletic. “Dorgu has scored three goals with one assist in 20 Serie A appearances this season for a side battling to avoid relegation and is regarded as being comfortable in the final third.”

Should any potential transfer get over the line in the coming days, it mightn’t spell the last of United’s business.

Whitwell adds in his report that the club ‘are said to be working on another possible deal’ – despite INEOS’ rigorous cost-cutting endeavours in recent months.

Presumably, they’ll be looking at the forward market amid Antony’s impending move to Real Betis, Marcus Rashford’s uncertain future and Alejandro Garnacho’s ongoing saga, which has seen him attract concrete interest from both Chelsea and Napoli.

The Serie A leaders saw a £40 million bid rebuffed by the Reds last week due to it not meeting their £60m valuation, though they are expected to return with an improved proposal soon.

Whether Chelsea will step up their pursuit with a formal offer remains to be seen. United may be inclined to increase their asking price for a direct Premier League rival, especially given they’re more than capable of paying the big bucks for players under Todd Boehly.
