Injury report, top storylines for the game

  • South Carolina injury report: OUT — Jakai Moore (OL); DOUBTFUL — Emory Floyd (DB); QUESTIONABLE — David Spaulding (LB); PROBABLE — Bangally Kamara (LB), Gilber Edmond (edge); Bryan Thomas Jr. (edge)

  • Bounce-back game?: While the Gamecocks left Week 1 with a win, their performance left much to be desired. The defense performed well, having forced four fumbles and snagging two interceptions in the 23-19 victory. Coach Shane Beamer and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains pointed toward poor perimeter blocking on offense and lack of explosiveness in the pass game as low points. Can South Carolina show positive progress from Week 1 to Week 2?

  • Kennard, Stewart versus SEC offensive line: Edge rushers Kyle Kennard (transfer from Georgia Tech) and Dylan Stewart (five-star freshman) combined for nine tackles, four sacks and three forced fumbles against Old Dominion last week. Granted, no offensive line in FBS allowed more sacks in 2023 than the Monarchs. Saturday is a chance to see how Kennard’s and Stewart’s skillsets translate to SEC play.

  • Can the receivers get right?: Loggains said the Gamecocks weren’t explosive enough in the pass game versus ODU, which is how a team scores points. Had transfer wide receiver Jared Brown not dropped a huge pass from Sellers in the first quarter, that probably wouldn’t have been the case. But Brown’s drop wasn’t the only issue Saturday. Beamer criticized his wide receivers and tide ends for inadequate blocking as well. Kentucky should provide a bigger challenge, and it remains to be seen how South Carolina will react.

Weather forecast for Lexington, KY

Lexington will be sunny with a high near 72 degrees Saturday with a 30% chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service.

ESPN FPI game prediction
