Uruguay exited the Copa America semi-finals at the hands of Colombia in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday night. The end of the match descended into anarchy though, as Uruguay players were seen fighting with the Colombia fans in the stands.

Following the match, Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo, Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez were all seen in the stands fighting the fans.

Real Madrid’s Fede Valverde was also seen exiting the seen rapidly with his recently born baby. The Celeste players claim they marched into the stands to protect their family members from the Colombia support, who began raining down drinks and some objects on them, as they were sat towards the front of the stand. It took security and police some time to separate the two factions.

During the scenes, Nunez can be seen hitting a Colombia fan, although he was slapped by the fan beforehand. That said, some have claimed that the Uruguay staff in the area were responsible for the initiation of hostilities, alleging they threw the first punches.

According to El Pais de Montevideo, as carried by Marca, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte’s mother was one of those in the crowd, and reportedly fainted in the tunnel after she had been removed from the scene. Gimenez also defended his teammates, calling the entire scene a ‘disaster’.
