After a hall-of-shame officiating performance by Andy Madley last night, Manchester United deservedly reigned victorious following 120 minutes and a penalty shootout in North London.

Ruben Amorim and his men defied the odds stacked against them at the Emirates on Sunday evening to eventually book their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup, knocking out the competition’s goliaths, Arsenal, in the process.

It took a resilient showing from United to get over the line, which was only made more difficult by Madley’s ludicrous on-field decision-making. The lack of VAR meant that anything he gave was unable to be rectified or disputed, despite some calls being categorically incorrect.

Take Arsenal’s second-half penalty, for example. Kai Havertz dropped down in the area after barely making contact with Harry Maguire’s arm. His theatric dive, of course, resulted in a spot-kick being awarded, after which Martin Odegaard saw his effort parried away by Altay Bayindir.

After the ball had gone out of play, Lisandro Martinez and Manuel Ugarte were quick on the scene to rub salt in Havertz’s wounds, as they were spotted heading straight over the German international and clattering into him.

To make things even sweeter for United, Havertz was the only Arsenal player to have his penalty saved in the shootout, therefore confirming his side’s exit on their home turf.

It also meant that Maguire could finish the game with his top-drawer performance unscathed by the ludicrous penalty decision. He completed 100 per cent of his take-ons, won 100 per cent of his aerial duels and 75 per cent of his ground duels.

The stalwart centre-half also made 11 clearances, five blocks, and four recoveries. Maguire was not dribbled past once in his 104 minutes played.
