Washington at USC football: Predictions, odds, how to watch Pac-12 showdown in Los Angeles

The final season of Pac-12 football features some of the best matchups in the country and Week 10 is no different. The No. 5 Washington Huskies travel to Southern California to take on the No. 22 USC Trojans in a what could be another high-scoring Pac-12 game this fall.

Washington's been one of the stories of the season through two months of action. Huskies quarterback and Heisman frontrunner Michael Penix Jr. leads the most prolific passing attack in the country averaging nearly 400 yards through the air per game. His 2,945 passing yards through eight games leads the nation and his 24 touchdowns rank third as well.

The Huskies' dynamic offense powered them to at least 30 points through each of the first six games of the season. Washington racked up wins quickly: 56-19 over Boise State, 43-10 over Tulsa, 41-7 over Michigan State, 59-32 over Cal, 31-24 over Arizona, and 36-33 over Oregon. The win against Oregon came down to a missed field goal by the Ducks as time expired.

Pac-12 showdown: No. 5 Washington, No. 24 USC both embrace chance to do something special

After that Oregon win, Washington eked out a 15-7 win over Arizona State at home and outlasted Stanford 42-33 on the road last week. Both were far cries from the double-digit wins the Huskies posted weekly early on in the season.

“Every win is hard, especially when you get to conference play and teams can do a good job of trying to see what it is they need to try to do to slow you down," Washington coach Kalen DeBoer said. "We’re doing the same for the teams that we play. So yeah, I think every season that I’ve been a part of, there’s very few where it’s just been this clean, easy ride throughout the course of the year.”

This week, the Huskies take on a Trojans team making its way through an up-and-down 2023 season.

USC started off hot with four double-digit wins to start the season. A 56-28 win over San Jose State in the opener preceded a 66-14 win against Nevada, 56-10 victory over Stanford, and a 42-28 win over Arizona State.

Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams pushed the Trojans offense to great heights in that four-game stretch, averaging more than four touchdowns a game.

The Trojans won their next two games. A 48-41 win over Colorado on the road kept the Trojans perfect despite a late comeback attempt by the Buffaloes. A week later, Williams scored on three overtime possessions to push USC past Arizona 43-41 at home.

“You don’t want to put yourself in that hole,” USC coach Lincoln Riley said after that overtime win. "But when you’re in it, you can feel sorry for yourself or you can dig yourself out.”

The next week, USC dug a hole they couldn't get out from. Notre Dame knocked off the Trojans 48-20 and forced Williams into the first three-interception game of his college career. A week later, Utah continued its run of wins against USC with a 34-32 victory in Los Angeles to hand Riley his first home loss as Trojans head coach.

The Trojans got back on track last week with an incredibly tight 50-49 win over Cal in Berkeley.

"The last two weeks, things haven’t went our way," Riley said. "To step up here on the road and go find a way to get this sucker done was huge. There’s a lot to build on and there’s a lot that needs to improve.”

Postseason form: No. 5 Washington faces a challenging final month that will prove if the Huskies are playoff worthy

The two teams meet with different objectives for the win. Washington needs a win ahead of games against more ranked teams in the Pac-12. Staying perfect improves the Huskies' chance at making the College Football Playoff. USC, by contrast, needs a win to keep up with the Huskies and Oregon at the top of the conference standings.
