Another week, another win for the Washington Huskies in a 15-7 victory over Arizona State. A late interception returned for a touchdown bailed out the Huskies' offense led by Heisman contender Michael Penix Jr. The Washington quarterback had his worst game of the season with three turnovers and a season-low 275 yards passing.

"We had adversity early in the game," Penix Jr. said. “I can’t turn the ball over and put the team in that position.”

The Washington offense failed to clear 300 total yards for the first time in 2023.

“They were disrupting our flow,” said Huskies coach Kalen DeBoer. “We’d make a big play and then have a net negative loss, which is something that we do actually a really good job of most of the time throughout the year. We'll watch the film.”

The Huskies remain perfect on the season and in Pac-12 conference play.

This week, the Huskies (7-0, 4-0 Pac-12) head south to take on Stanford (2-5, 1-4). The Cardinal are struggling this fall. A shocking 30-23 loss to Sacramento State in Week 3 preceded a rough stretch of Pac-12 games. After their bye, the Cardinal came back from a 29-0 halftime deficit to beat Colorado 46-43 in double overtime.

"Everybody came together as a whole," Stanford wide receiver Elic Ayomanor told ESPN. "It wasn’t just an effort by myself; it was an effort by the whole team really. That was what allowed us to win."

The shine from that win quickly fell off in last week's 42-7 loss to No. 24 UCLA (5-2, 2-2). Stanford's defense gave up 503 yards and as a team the Cardinal tallied 10 penalties for 113 yards.

The Bruins went up 21-0 by halftime and stretched the lead to 35-0 before Stanford finally got in the end zone.

“Our margin for victory is thin," Stanford coach Troy Taylor said. "We’ve got to start off faster. We just have to.”

Unfortunately for Stanford, Washington has one of the fastest and most prolific offenses in the country. It'll be a tough task to contain the Huskies this weekend.

Washington vs. Stanford: Match-up summary

The Cardinal host the Huskies in a matchup where the two teams could not be farther apart in where they stand in 2023. Washington's making a run at a potential College Football Playoff spot; Stanford's trying to avoid last place in the Pac-12.

The two teams first met on Dec. 29, 1893, with Stanford winning 40-0. In the 92 games since that day, Washington has a slight edge and has a 45-44-4 overall record against the Cardinal.

Washington's won the last two matchups 40-22 in 2022 and 20-13 in 2021. Those wins came after a stretch from 2013-2020 in which Stanford won six out of eight games.

This is Washington's best offense under DeBoer featuring multiple NFL draft picks. The Cardinal struggled to stop USC and Oregon earlier in the year and it won't get much easier this Saturday at home. It'd be a big surprise to see Stanford beat Washington for the first time since 2020.
