Walleye Netminder Named ECHL Goaltender Of The Week
Carter Gylander of the Toledo Walleye is the Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Dec. 30-Jan. 5, the league announced Monday.
Toledo has been on fire of late, taking all possible eight points during a busy week, and Gylander has been a big part of that stretch.
The 23-year-old Alberta native went 3-0-0 with one shutout, a 1.67 goals-against average and a save percentage of .952 in three appearances for the Walleye last week.
Gylander stopped 30 shots in a 3-2 come-from-behind win at Cincinnati on Tuesday. He was part of another comeback on the road Friday, making 44 saves in a 4-3 victory at Fort Wayne against the Komets. He then turned aside all 26 shots in a 3-0 win over the Komets on Saturday, one of two shutouts recorded by Toledo at home over the weekend.
The Detroit Red Wings signed Gylander to a two-year entry-level contract last March after selecting him in the seventh round (191st overall) in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He has appeared in 13 games with the Walleye this season going 9-2-2 with two shutouts, a 2.22 goals-against average - which ranks seventh in the ECHL - and a save percentage of .921, eighth in the league.
Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-5, 196-pound netminder saw action in 106 career NCAA games at Colgate University where he went 46-46-13 with five shutouts, a 2.69 goals-against average and a save percentage of .907. He helped the Raiders clinch an NCAA Tournament berth during his junior year, going 19-15-5 with a 2.46 GAA and .914 SP along with two shutouts in 39 appearances.
Over his junior hockey career, Gylander spent parts of three seasons with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he earned a 51-9-0 record with a 2.23 goals-against average, a 0.919 save percentage and six shutouts in 64 appearances from 2017-20.
Toledo is back on the road to take on the Bloomington Bison on Friday before completing the home-and-home series with Bloomington on Sunday.
