Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Dutch international Vivianne Miedema in a major transfer announcement. The striker joins Gareth Taylor’s side following her exit from Arsenal, where she had spent the previous seven seasons.

Miedema joins the WSL runners-up with a proven goal-scoring record, having netted 79 league goals for the Gunners. Taking the number six shirt, previously worn by retired captain Steph Houghton, Miedema will join international teammates Jill Roord and Kerstin Casparij in Manchester.

Miedema’s signing comes at a pivotal time for Man City. With their squad depleted through injuries and transfers, the 27-year-old’s arrival could prove crucial for their title challenge. Club top scorer Bunny Shaw spent much of the end of the season sidelined through a foot injury, leaving Taylor’s side short of a defined striker.

Miedema swaps Arsenal for City

The arrival of Miedema is a real statement signing. Bringing in the Women’s Super League’s all-time top goalscorer, is a major move for title-challengers City.

Speaking on her move, Miedema said “It feels really nice to be in blue. I’m really excited to be here and to get started and hopefully win a lot of things together. I think having thought really hard about my future after leaving Arsenal, the main thing that popped up was that I wanted to be at a team who are playing good football.

“I’m only 27. Obviously, I haven’t played as much football as I would have wished over the past two years. I think and hope my best years are still to come and I really hope that’s going to be here at City. I hope I’m going to be able to help the team as much as I can do. I’m just really excited to be part of the team and for the girls to hopefully help me and get me back to my best. Looking forward to the future, I’ve always said I want to play with the best players in the world. I think City have got that. Attacking-wise, they’ve got so many different players with different qualities.”

‘Viv is aligned to this desire’

Managing Director Charlotte O’Neill added: “Our North Star is to become the best women’s sporting organisation in the world. Key to achieving our ambitions, on and off the pitch, is to recruit, retain and develop the world’s best players and consistently challenge for major titles. Viv’s signing is very much part of that plan.”

Gareth Taylor continued: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming Viv to City and seeing her flourish over the next three years. Our ambition is to compete on the highest stage and for the highest honours. Viv is aligned to this desire. She’s a top talent that I’m excited to work with as she’s a player I’ve always admired. Viv will be a real asset to the team.”
